Functional drinks:
what’s moving.

We mapped 62 drink formats across 15 functional needs, using search, social and sales signals. A pattern stands out: some of the fastest-growing searches concern everyday maintenance—recovery, steady energy and digestion.

62drink formats measured
15functional needs
3streams: social, search and sales

Evidence cutoff: October 30, 2026. Google figures compare average monthly US searches in October 2025–September 2026 with October 2024–September 2025. Pinterest figures are year-over-year changes read October 30. Search interest is not purchase intent.

Four shifts worth watching

A drink’s job
is changing.

Strong means three rising streams; Building two; Early one. A social example shows presence; it does not establish growth without comparable readings or an index.

01

Building

Recovery becomes a clearer hydration job

Searches for electrolytes when sick or hungover rose at least 88%. Coconut water searches grew 30%, with Pinterest Trends up 60% year over year. Electrolyte drinks grew 8%.

What it might mean. Recovery occasions and familiar hydration formats offer directions to test. Separate trends do not establish that people are abandoning powders.

Worth checking. Which occasion your product serves, and whether taste, format and messaging fit it. The Building label rests on coconut water's search and social signals; recovery searches alone are Early.

02

Early

Energy without the crash attracts attention

Paraxanthine searches rose 153%, while caffeine-pill searches fell 13%. Energy-drink searches rose 18%.

What it might mean. Search interest suggests an opening for energy positioned around the costs people want to avoid. It does not establish ingredient efficacy or prove a switch from caffeine.

Worth checking. Whether demand persists beyond launch marketing. Amazon performance is in line with the category, and broader social direction does not confirm momentum.

03

Early

Fiber brings a practical focus to gut health

Prebiotic fiber searches grew 79%, and fiber drinks overall rose 46%. Kefir's annual search volume rose 20%, while its recent Google Trends direction was broadly flat (+4% over 52 weeks); kombucha's annual searches fell 8%.

What it might mean. Fiber in familiar drinks and foods may be worth testing. The annual search comparison and the recent Trends direction measure different things.

Worth checking. Whether the promise names a result your audience wants, and whether search interest translates into repeat purchase. Social and sales do not yet confirm this shift.

04

Building

Soda keeps its place and changes its job

Soda searches were broadly flat (-1%). Dirty soda grew 152%, with Pinterest Trends up 80%; zero sugar soda grew 26% and sold ahead of the sampled Amazon category.

What it might mean. Less sugar and customization offer different ways to preserve the soda occasion. These searches do not show the same people making both choices.

Worth checking. The fit of zero-sugar bases, mix-ins and rituals with your audience. Building rests on zero sugar soda's search and sales signals; dirty soda alone is Early because social direction is mixed.

Your next innovation brief

Start with the job
behind the drink.

Some familiar wellness formats are losing search interest: mushroom coffee and wellness shots each fell 20%; adrenal cocktails fell 54%.

What it might mean. Declining interest in one format can sit alongside growth in another serving a related need. It offers a research question, not proof of switching or lost shelf space.

Worth checking. Is your concept answering a growing need? Does the opportunity sit in a drink, or in a nearby format such as a pouch, gummy, snack or frozen treat? Compare the signals with your audience and sales before committing to a brief.

How we read the market

The Tomorrow& research map connects what people search, post and buy. This edition draws on TikTok, Reddit, YouTube and Pinterest; Google and Amazon search; and Amazon US and TikTok Shop sales signals. It examines 62 drink formats, 15 functional needs and 98 drink-and-audience pair searches with volume.

Amazon assessments compare sampled listings’ selling pace with their own 90-day average and then with the study sample. Year-over-year sales history is context only. TikTok Shop figures are cumulative units sold, not growth rates. Social direction uses dated comparisons and indices; examples without comparable readings show presence only. Instagram is not covered.

What it might mean. Agreement across streams can strengthen a hypothesis, within each source’s coverage limits. The sample covers selected platforms and listings, rather than the entire US market.

Worth checking. Validate current demand, competitive conditions and product claims with the evidence appropriate to your decision. The report identifies opportunities, not proven causes or guaranteed outcomes.
