Where blush is going

“A couple of years ago blushes started going into more precise applicators using liquid formats, but I also see some traditional formats like Covergirl’s new Baked Blush doing well. How have blushes evolved and where are they going?”The question we were asked

The short answer

  1. Powder is back, and layering is part of the conversation. Searches for liquid, jelly and stick blush are easing, while powder holds. Much of the conversation is about wearing powder on top of liquid or cream. The evidence does not establish whether the same shoppers are layering or switching.
  2. The colour is changing faster than the format. After two years of “blush blindness” (too much pink), searches for “anti-blush” went from almost none in June to 5,400 a month in September. People want muted beige and rosy-brown shades that look like their own skin.
  3. Technique is now the product. Duos, combos and placement tips are where the attention is: cream and powder in one compact, blush placed to lift the face. The next blush will probably be judged by how easily it layers, not by its applicator.

How sure we are

Search and social give a clear direction. Sales are a single October reading, not a sustained trend. A January reading would help distinguish lasting change from seasonality.

How blush got here

1. Powder is holding, layering is visible, and baked blush is being relaunched

Powder is back, and much of the conversation is about wearing it on top of liquid or cream. Baked powder is being relaunched by several brands. The evidence does not establish whether shoppers are layering or switching.

What people wantColour that lasts all day and looks lit from within, without the patchiness of liquid on its own.
WhyAfter years of dewy liquids, people want them set and long-wearing. Powder does that. Baked powder adds the glow people got used to with liquids.
Where it leadsPowder sold as the step that goes on top of liquid or cream: “toppers”, cream-to-powder formulas, and powders with skincare and glow claims (Covergirl’s has hyaluronic acid).

About Covergirl’s Baked Blush

Its search and Amazon signals are encouraging. It launched in November 2025 and Google searches peaked at 2,900 a month in December and January, then settled to about 320. Amazon shows 2,000+ bought in the past month, and it is selling steadily. Covergirl’s older powders (Cheekers, Classic Color) have dropped down Amazon’s list while the baked one sells steadily. This does not show buyer migration or the brand’s intent; the older list also contained several variants of the same products. Milani’s Baked Blush was also updated: it was relaunched with a new formula in December 2025 and searches are up 60%.

What else could explain itAutumn favours powder and matte finishes every year, and part of this is brands pushing launches (Covergirl, Essence, Milani) rather than people asking for them. Amazon has always leaned towards drugstore powder.
What would change our viewIf Covergirl’s and Milani’s Amazon sales slow for two months running, and “baked blush” searches fall in spring 2027, this is a launch wave and not a lasting move.

2. The colour is turning: from blush blindness to “anti-blush”

After two years of bright pink cheeks, people now want blush that looks like their own skin: beige, rosy brown, toasty and muted shades. It is three months old and growing fast.

What people wantWarmth that reads as a natural flush, in a shade close to their skin tone and undertone.
WhyTiredness with the “blush blindness” look, and a wider swing towards softer, more neutral makeup. Commenters call it a return to 2016 or 90s makeup.
Where it leadsNeutral shade ranges built by undertone, including deeper skin. People are already making their own: they mix foundation into the blush they have.

What else could explain itIt’s a new name for an old look (sun-kissed, “blonzer”, nude blush), and a name can fade as fast as it came. “Transition blush” jumped to 5,400 searches in April 2026 and was back to 1,000 by June.
What would change our viewPinterest is the place to watch: if “anti blush” or “beige blush” becomes big enough to appear in Pinterest Trends this winter, the look has spread beyond TikTok. If “anti blush” falls below 1,000 Google searches a month by January, it was a meme. If beige and muted shades from several brands sell above their averages through the holidays, the shift is real.

3. Technique is the new format: duos, combos and placement

Attention has moved from the applicator to the routine: which two blushes to layer, and where on the face to put them.

What people wantA result that looks professional, with less guesswork: shade pairs that work together and placement that lifts the face.
WhyCreators teach layering (cream first, then powder) and placement maps. Once you know the technique you need two products that suit each other, and buying two separate blushes costs more.
Where it leadsCream and powder sold as a pair, shade-matched, at drugstore prices. Placement guidance for different face shapes and ages. This borrows from skincare layering and from fragrance layering, which is just as busy on Reddit.

What else could explain itTutorials always get views. TikTok search also favours recent videos, so the 90-day comparisons on TikTok lean upward for every term. Search gives the cleaner direction.
What would change our viewIf duo products on Amazon and TikTok Shop sell less over the holidays than single blushes do, people are learning the technique but using blushes they already own.

Openings worth testing

Places where the evidence suggests people want something a product could provide. They are starting points for your own testing, not conclusions about the market.

A powder made to go on top

A sheer baked or blurring powder sold as the finishing step over the liquid or cream people already own: it sets the colour, adds glow and makes it last. “Topper” is already people’s own word for it.

Neutral shades matched to undertone, deeper skin included

Beige, rosy-brown, terracotta and muted berry, offered by undertone and depth. Also a small “muting” drop people can mix into a blush they already own, since some are mixing in foundation to do this now. On Pinterest people are already asking for it by skin tone: “Anti-blush on dark skin”, and “most anti-blush shades pull ashy on tan complexions”.

How we read this

Search: Google monthly volumes from Google Ads, 12 months against the 12 before (to September 2026), and Google Trends for the long view; Amazon search volumes (current level). Sales: Amazon sales rank against each product’s 90-day average for the top 40 sellers in Amazon’s Blush category (Keepa, read 22 October 2026), and TikTok Shop sold counts (lifetime totals, one read). Social: about 1,000 TikTok videos from 12 searches, comments on 8 of the top videos, Reddit and YouTube searches, and about 900 Pinterest pins from 8 searches (pins from people counted separately from shop and brand pins, by the date they were pinned). Every video, thread and product quoted here was opened and dated. A finding needs at least two kinds of signal to agree. Product examples are illustrations, never a statement about gaps in the market. Context: Glossy, Marie Claire UK.

Strength labels describe agreement across different kinds of evidence in this single pass. They are not back-tested forecast scores. Pinterest Trends was read visually from a screenshot, so changes are approximate. TikTok search favours recent videos; view comparisons are supporting context, never a standalone reading.
